The "KKC" is a well-established institution in Amstelveen and the surrounding area. This secondary school is currently experiencing rapid growth, now serving around 1,750 students, with no signs of slowing down. As a result, this expansion prompted a major renovation aimed at adding more space, improving quality, and making the building more sustainable. Thomas Bögl explains, “We held design workshops with teachers and students, focusing on how the future of education might look and how this would shape the design of the ideal school. It was the perfect opportunity to introduce educational innovations, while still preserving the charm of the current school.”
Tailored solutions were implemented throughout the building. Each subject cluster now has its own unique look and corresponding learning space, helping to create a clear and organized environment for both students and teachers. This setup also encourages greater social interaction, making it a more pleasant space to spend time in. Rector Nan Botting shares, “We’re already seeing that students are proud of their new, beautiful learning environment. It’s more spacious and brighter, which has a positive effect on them. They seem calmer.” One of the patios has been transformed into a green oasis—a space where you can feel outdoors while still being indoors. Another learning area features an impressive lecture hall, where students are introduced to the experience of university-style lectures.
