Global Intergenerational Week: Living and learning together in IKOC Noord-Scharwoude

Thursday May 15, 2025

This week marks Global Intergenerational Week—a moment to spotlight projects that bring generations together and strengthen communities. One such initiative is the new Intergenerational Child and Elderly Centre (IKOC) in Noord-Scharwoude. This inspiring project embodies the very goal of the week: fostering interaction between young and old through shared spaces and meaningful encounters. The IKOC will house a small society under one roof. It combines spaces for education and care with shared facilities that encourage everyday contact between generations. Imagine children inviting older residents to a play, seniors reading stories with toddlers, or parents stopping by the care centre for a cup of coffee with the elderly after dropping off their child at daycare.

“The design posed an interesting challenge,” explains Carina Nørregaard. “How do you create a space where everyone feels safe and at home—and at the same time encourage different generations to connect and support one another? We focused on a human scale and deliberately designed for social interaction. Spatial design influences behaviour, so we removed literal and figurative thresholds wherever possible. Your eye is naturally drawn to the vibrant heart of the building, where shared facilities like the restaurant, studio and library are located. When you see something happening, you’re more likely to join in.”

Horizon Care Centre, Allente (an educational foundation), and the Municipality of Dijk en Waard joined forces to realise this ambitious project. Together, they are creating a place where generations not only meet but truly live and grow together. Carina is confident in its success: “Wouldn’t it be wonderful if older adults here feel more connected, healthier and more joyful—while children develop greater empathy, simply because helping someone older becomes second nature?”
